The Department of Physics and Biophysics at the University of San Diego, a primarily undergraduate institution committed to providing a liberal arts education, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship to start in Fall 2024. This position is part of a cluster hiring initiative in the College of Arts and Sciences designed to recruit a diverse cohort of teacher-scholars and to support interdisciplinary opportunities in teaching and research. Given the themes of the cluster hire initiative and the needs of our department, we encourage applications from those with research expertise in biophysics, applied physics, observational and experimental astrophysics, physics education research, and climate/atmospheric physics. However, applicants who have other areas of research are highly encouraged to apply as well. We will prioritize candidates interested in exploring issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in physics through their teaching, scholarship, and service.

The Department of Physics and Biophysics, within the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of San Diego, offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Physics and in Biophysics. We are proud of the personalized student mentoring, the small class sizes, and independent research opportunities our faculty provide. Our faculty normally teach about 3 courses per semester and have opportunities to teach across the undergraduate curriculum, develop new courses, and team-teach interdisciplinary courses. Our faculty involve undergraduates at every level of their research programs. Current faculty conduct research in atomic physics, plasma physics, computational astrophysics, astroparticle physics, soft condensed matter, and biophysics.

Job Requirements: Candidates should hold a PhD in Physics, though related fields will be considered on a case-by-case basis. ABD candidates will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates should also have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity.

Application Process: Candidates should go to https://jobs.sandiego.edu/cw/en-us/job/496411/assistant-professor-in-the-department-of-physics-and-biophysics to find more complete application instructions. In short, we ask candidates to submit the following materials (1) letter of application, include reference to the cluster(s) of interest; (2) CV; (3) teaching statement and sample syllabus; (4) research statement and a sample of scholarly work; (5) diversity statement which addresses (a) your values with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion; (a) your experience working with minoritized populations and/or on issues that disproportionately affect diverse populations; and (a) your plans related to diversity and inclusion in your teaching and research.

For full consideration, applications should be completed and submitted by October 1, 2023.
