Position Focus

Yale University Cleanroom is an advanced research core facility with an expanding suite of micro/nanofabrication instruments positioned in multiple campus locations. We are seeking a Staff Scientist who has broad experience in fabrication with an emphasis on dry etching and optical lithography, with exposure to thin film deposition and metrology. The Staff Scientist will work closely with talented Yale researchers to support cutting-edge research, such as quantum science, nonlinear optics, photonics, and biomedical engineering, and will work in direct support of the multidisciplinary institutes at Yale West Campus. The ideal candidate must have a strong science/engineering background, with an interest in teaching and cleanroom management.

Key responsibilities include:1) Lead the effort in managing optical lithography systems, including Heidelberg MLA150 laser writer, Suss MJB4 contact aligner, HMDS priming oven, resist spinners.2) Collaborate with other staff to manage dry etching systems such as O2 plasma asher, RIE, ICP-RIE and DRIE. 3) Understand the basic operation of thin film deposition and metrology systems. 4) Oversee the service and maintenance of advanced instruments in optical lithography. 5) Work with other staff, Yale researchers and equipment vendors to update processes and instruments to meet evolving research needs. 6) Create detailed documentation, including SOPs and tool specifications. 7) Train and mentor the next generation of researchers in micro/nanofabrication.

Essential Duties

1. User Training: Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research core. 2. Experiment Support: Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research core. 3. Facility/Instrument Support: Manage and oversee research projects within the research core. 4. Technique Development: Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core services. 5. Data Analysis/Interpretation: Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and recommendations. 6. Equipment Procurement: Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment. 7. Professional Development: Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific conferences. 8. Scientific Participation: Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals. 9. Staff Training and Mentoring: Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff members. 10. Vendor Relations: Manage vendor relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates new technologies for optimal procurement processes. 11. Education and Outreach: Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Expertise in optical lithography (laser writer, contact aligner, HMDS priming oven, resist spinner).

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Hands-on experience in dry etching and thin film deposition.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Familiar with metrology using optical microscopes, SEM, reflectometers, profilometers, and ellipsometry.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Experience with process analysis, statistical process control (SPC), and design of experiments (DOE).

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Knowledge of lab safety techniques including hazardous gas and chemical safety.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

5+ years hands-on experience in optical lithography in the semiconductor industry or in relevant cleanroom facilities.
