The international accelerator center FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, is currently being built in Darmstadt. FAIR is under construction at the existing research center GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. At FAIR, matter that usually only exists in the depth of space will be produced and studied in the laboratory, in order to gain new insights into the evolution of the universe and the structure of matter. The FAIR “Site Management” (SMG) division is looking for an experienced Division Head of FAIR Accelerator Assembly (all genders).

The challenging and responsible task includes the coordination of the installation of the FAIR accelerator on the construction site and contribution to the implementation of the agreed installation strategy.  

Your tasks:

  • Management of the division responsible for the large installation project (1 billion euro investment volume) for accelerator assembly, with thousands of complex individual components in collaboration with over 100 work package managers;
  • Planning and coordination of the sub-projects for machine installation;
  • Control of scheduling as well as cost and risk management;
  • Ensuring installation quality through assembly and testing strategies with the associated work and testing instructions;
  • Coordination of document management for the proper documentation of the installation process;
  • Close cooperation with site management, particularly with regard to safety and logistical processes.

Your profile:

  • Degree in physics or mechanical engineering, proven expertise in industrial plant engineering;
  • Several years of experience in leading technical teams in large-scale projects in mechanical or industrial plant engineering;
  • Relevant professional experience in the assembly of complex industrial plants;
  • An advantage: Expertise in acceleration technology, in particular ultra-high vacuum, radiation protection, cryogenics, power supply and power supply units as well as control systems;
  • Relevant experience in planning and managing complex multidisciplinary and international projects;
  • Fluent written and spoken German (at least C1 level), English skills business fluent;
  • Very good knowledge of MS Office, DMS and project planning software;
  • High level of commitment, integrative leadership style, ability to work under pressure, transparent communication and a proactive and confident manner.

A strong interest in actively participating in the assembly of the FAIR accelerator system on the construction site rounds off the profile. The position is permanent. The salary is based on the public service collective agreement (Federal Government) “TVöD” applicable at FAIR.
