Assistant or Associate Professor in Quantum Materials

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in quantum materials simulation/theory with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2025.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a broad approach to and interest in strongly correlated electron systems, non-equilibrium physics, and quantum information science. The ideal candidate will complement the research interests of current faculty and will be able and eager to collaborate with our experimental, theoretical, and simulational quantum materials and nano-optics groups focused on strongly correlated systems and van der Waals materials, as well as more generally interface with our NSF-funded Quantum Networks Training and Research Alliance in the Southeast (QuaNTRASE) training program. However, outstanding candidates in all fields of computational/simulational/theoretical condensed matter physics, materials physics, and quantum information science will be considered. This position opens at the assistant professor level; in exceptional cases, appointments at the associate professor level will be considered.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline with at least one year of postdoctoral experience. The new hire will be expected to develop a nationally recognized and externally funded research program, engage in high-quality mentoring and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, contribute to an environment of inclusive excellence, and participate in departmental and professional service.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire. 

The Department, which currently has 23 faculty members, 10 of whom work in the area of nanoscience and condensed matter physics, values interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with national laboratories. The University of Georgia is a member of the Battelle Savannah River Alliance managing and operating the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Faculty have the opportunity to build collaborations with SRNL research staff as well as leverage co-located facilities, such as the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative featuring cutting-edge materials modeling and simulations.
