Pay Range

$54.60 - $66.30 Hourly (480.3)

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We’re looking for a Deaf Interpreting Specialist to serve as an interpreter to translate and communicate using American Sign Language (ASL). This position is being offered as part-time, up to 20 hours a week, and monthly pay posted will be adjusted accordingly. The successful candidate will have the ability to receive, process and deliver information while maintaining composure and effectively managing the flow of information. This position may require the successful candidate to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments. This position is in the Human Resources (HR) Directorate and will report to the Employee Engagement Division Leader.

You will

  • Serves as an intermediary interpreter to interpret, translate, and explain using ASL, signed languages, including other forms of visual communication.
  • Ensures the message is clearly communicated and matches the affect, integrity, and intent of the message.
  • Interprets with discretion and ensures ethical code of behavior; and protects the confidentiality of information.
  • Researches and understands terminology used in a scientific study to accurately interpret information.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a United States (U.S.) DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or a combination of formal interpretation training and or relevant experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or National Association of the Deaf (NAD).
  • Knowledge of best practices in interpreting; communication styles and methods.
  • Must possess a robust English and ASL vocabulary to accurately convey information.
  • Ability to receive, process and deliver information while maintaining composure and effectively managing the flow of information.
  • Ability to identify the preferred communication modalities/preferences of individuals in the conversation, and working relationships with a diverse population.
  • Experience operating a computer using standard business software, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to operate standard office equipment.
