The State University of New York at Fredonia invites applications for a non-tenure track, academic-year appointment as Lecturer in Physics starting in August 2024. This position offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching introductory undergraduate courses in the department, including the algebra-based physics sequence. This position has the potential to be renewed. There are no assigned duties during the summer months, but there are opportunities for summer teaching for additional salary.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will:

  • Instruct a course load of up to twelve contact hours a semester of physics lecture and/or lab courses;
  • Have a reflective approach to teaching with a commitment to collecting and assessing data on student learning and engagement;
  • Contribute to curriculum development and refinement;
  • Provide academic advisement to students;
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Physics or closely related field;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach introductory physics courses and labs;
  • Demonstrated evidence of potential for excellent teaching;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively, and in a collegial and professional manner, with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive education.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching astronomy courses;
  • Experience with instructional technology;
  • Expertise in running a planetarium for coursework and community outreach;
  • Familiarity in operating a permanently mounted 15” or larger telescope for student research projects and open observatory nights;
  • New York State Certification for Adolescence Education in Physics or closely related field;
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering or closely related field;
  • Interest in, and commitment to, community engagement.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, term appointed, lecturer position beginning August 2024. Salary range is $49,000 - $53,000 depending on qualifications.
