Pay Range: $159,330- $245,544 annually
$159,330 - $204,636 annually for the SES.3 level
$191,220 - $245,544for the SES.4 level

Job Description
We have multiple openings for Senior Project Engineers. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022 (as well as multiple subsequent times), a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.
You will provide technical leadership and expertise for new and ongoing projects for the NIF&PS Directorate. You will be part of teams developing innovative high-power laser components and systems using advanced design and manufacturing techniques for scientific and defense applications. Typical projects require diverse engineering expertise including highly advanced systems engineering; engineering analysis and computational simulation; extreme precision and unique materials; prototype design; state of the art fabrication and assembly; and engineering testing and deployment. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role, you will
- Provide technical guidance and leadership of team members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and deploying critical systems and components consistent with schedule and budget commitments.
- Set project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for deliverables.
- Provide expertise for engineering relevant subjects and provide technical guidance in development of solutions to complex problems that may not be well defined.
- Develop and manage schedules and budgets in support of projects, participate in working groups and design reviews, and oversee project execution throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide training, mentoring, and coaching to group personnel as well as prepare and present written and verbal presentations of technical work.
- Maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables, leverage team members’ skills to successfully complete complex projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level
- Successfully utilize existing work, internal resources, and partnerships to develop innovative capabilities to increase impact and lead the development of project portfolios.
- Champion projects and multi-disciplinary efforts to positively impact the team’s long-term goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with sponsors / customers and lead industry partners to address sponsor / customer needs from the Subject Matter Expert (SME) perspective.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevant field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in engineering relevant discipline with experience in project planning and technical leadership.
- Experience developing and implementing solutions to a diverse range of complex problems.
- Advanced communication including providing advice to management as needed.
- Experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
- Leadership skills to lead and manage small, multi-disciplinary teams.
Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level
- Extensive experience championing large dynamic projects and multi-organization efforts that positively affected the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree in Laser Science Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Successful track record of crafting new capabilities and catalyzing innovation to impact the long-term direction of an organization.
- Understanding of a diverse laboratory and national research environment, and the ability to work within that environment towards long-range goals.
