This Plant Engineer will be responsible for managing equipment, supplies, devices, and all other resources required for our to-be-opened quantum computer R&D laboratory in Greater Tokyo Area. This is an exciting opportunity to join at the onset of early stage of business expansion in Japan. 

You will work closely with our global ICS Operations team, which manages overall lab facility and projects as well as the Commercial Operation team which manages the actual quantum computer machine. You must have previous experience in managing technical equipment such as cryogenic systems, HVAC systems, optical lasers or fiber cables. Previous work experience in clean room environment, laboratory, manufacturing factory, chemical/material engineering area, electronics, or energy plant is a requirement. Experience in technology sector or Scientific research is highly appreciated. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead planning, development and management of our technical facility, in close collaboration with Japan team and global functional team.
  • Provide technical expertise throughout the project’s execution phase , including planning, engineering,  procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning. 
  • Perform analysis and develop basic instrumentation, control specifications, sizing of equipment and other infrastructure.
  • Support development and review of basic plant and equipment layout / general arrangement.
  • Work with the Plant Operations Manager to maintain HVAC, electrical and mechanical equipment, gas supply, cryogenic and liquefaction equipment, etc. in the occupied space while closely collaborating with the property management facilities team.  
  • Monitor and maintain key metrics in laboratory such as cryogenic system’s index, temperature, humidity, are at desired level.
  • Work with vendors to ensure all the laboratory and other supplies are in stock.
  • Support Plant Operations Manager to ensure the workplace is meeting all Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements (workplace monitoring, emergency response procedure, first aid, employee training, PPE supply, hazardous material handling, etc. Develop Problem Solving solutions to support our facility and laboratory environments. 
  • Implement corrective/preventive action for technical issues in laboratory and escalate cases to respective leaders and counterparts.
  • Partner with technical team technicians and assist them to troubleshoot mechanical and other building management related systems.
  • Maintain our Preventive Maintenance schedule by ensuring all actions (PM, audits, inspections, etc.) are in the work order system. 
  • Schedule downtimes for construction and mechanical support of systems that maintain site operations and establish appropriate communication process with key stakeholders.  

Requirement

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education in Science, ideally in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics Electronics.
  • 5+ years of working experience in manufacturing, technology related industry
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering in laboratory, factory, plant.
  • Experience in working in global, matrixed organization.
  • Fluency in both English & Japanese to conduct complex and technical business communication.
  • Ability to commute and work onsite at the laboratory.

Desirable:

  • High Pressure Gas Production Safety Manager license (高圧ガス製造保安責任者
  • Post graduate education.
  • An educational background in natural sciences or engineering.
  • Experience or a strong interest in quantum or emerging technologies.
  • International experience either in education or work.
  • Facility related certificate/license such as; Hazardous Materials Handler, Class 1 Health Supervisor, Electrician, Machinery maintenance technician
