We are seeking a highly qualified R&D Manager - Technology Development to lead a physics team pushing forward our technology roadmap for our Golden Valley, MN location. The manager in this position will lead and mentor a group of atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physicists, technicians, and engineers. This role comprises individual technical contribution, technical leadership, and people-management, in roughly equal parts. As such, candidates will boast a broad and deep understanding of quantum computing and/or atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead test stand teams trapping and manipulating ion qubits to push forward our technology roadmap Achieve high-quality, world-first results to prove out paths to deploying and scaling our quantum computing (QC) systems Contribute to updating and pushing forward our technology roadmap as both a subject matter expert and team leader Establish strategic plans for the team, including Technical scope – milestones, inchstones, and key decision points Develop test plans and identify key handoffs with technical partners Recognize critical interdependencies with peer groups and adjacent disciplines Hands-on support and management of critical technical priorities, as well as key long-term development projects Collaborate with QC system architects, Technology Development leaders, and theory team members to determine next and further generation system requirements and opportunities with a focus on scaling Perform and guide efforts in conceptualizing, developing, and demonstrating technical and functional methods to meet these requirements and realize these opportunities Co-own, with other relevant stakeholders, the QC/AMO technology portfolio, including IP development and capture, procurement planning, long-term development strategy, and roadmap planning Identify team-level staffing needs and fill key gaps via Mentoring, coaching, and training direct-reporting engineers & scientists Meet project objectives by hiring and developing staff with the right skills for success Plan and nurture career development of direct-reporting engineers & scientists Perform technical goal setting, employee performance assessments, and compensation adjustments   

You must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree  Minimum 8+ years of experience in technical research and development (graduate school inclusive) Minimum 2+ years of experience in the development and/or operation of AMO and/or Quantum Computing systems Minimum 1+ year of experience serving as the leader of an advanced technical team (either task leadership or personnel management, or both)  Applicants for employment for this position must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States and with Quantinuum.
