Pay Range

$247,800 - $318,216 Annually for the SEL.5 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a W87-1 Modification Program (MOD) Deputy Project Engineer. This position will support the W87-1 Project Engineer to oversee engineering activities and project execution. The selected candidate will be a member of the W87-1 MOD leadership team involved in programmatic duties that span the entire program. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division within the Engineering Directorate, supporting the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

You will

  • Support the W87-1 Project Engineer in executing required actions to support the overall execution of the W87-1 program.
  • Support the project management and execution of W87-1 program, including reviewing variance analyses, supporting the project engineer in reviews and follow-on corrective actions related to the overall integrated program schedule.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and/or supervision to team and program to ensure safe and efficient execution in W87-1 engineering activities; including participation in performance management activities.
  • Interface with NNSA and/or other partner sites on behalf of the W87-1 program.
  • Provide programmatic management solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues/technical problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time.
  • Ensure that program risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner to senior leadership.
  • Monitor programmatic performance required to meet milestones and deliverables; including accountability for results in terms of costs and strategies.
  • Direct or lead special assignment activities in support of the W87-1 Program.
  • Serve as a technical and/or programmatic contact for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committees both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and experience in, execution of nuclear weapon design, life extension and modernization programs, systems engineering, requirements management, weapon assessment activities and product realization processes between design and production agencies.
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities across the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, gain the cooperation of, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Significant leadership, interpersonal skills, organizational skills to lead a team, project, and/or group, provide performance feedback, and actively participate in performance management activities from a programmatic point of view.
  • Knowledge of applicable NNSA orders and requirements.
  • Ability/commitment to promote and value inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability principles in the workplace.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Expertise and experience with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing, and managing budgets, project control reporting, and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
  • Extensive experience sustaining productive relationships with other divisions, directorates, laboratories, plants, NNSA management, other institutions across the DOE and DOD enterprise.
