“GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung” in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world‘s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The “Superconducting Magnets & Testing” (SCM) department is looking for a candidate to join its “Magnet Electrical Systems” (SCM-MES) group:
Physicist or Engineer
Reference: 24.30-6351
as an expert for superconducting magnet electrical systems. As part of the FAIR project, many superconducting components as well as corresponding monitoring and protection systems are to be installed and commissioned in the coming years. With the opportunity to contribute own ideas and process design, you will have significant influence on the successful system launch.
Your tasks:
- Provisioning of components and related infrastructure for the “Quench Detection System” of the FAIR facility as well as our magnet test benches;
- Support of the test facility staff in terms of data acquisition and quench data analysis;
- Verification of electrical integrity on superconducting series components as well as troubleshooting and corrective actions coordination;
- Analysis of interference on operation of superconducting modules as well as preparation of concepts for correction.
Your skills:
- Degree in applied physics or engineering sciences (electrical engineering, cryogenics) or comparable qualification;
- Ideally, profound knowledge and work experience in one of the following domains: superconducting magnet technology, operation and protection of superconducting components, cryophysics;
- Programming experience with Python or C/C++;
- Expertise in electrical circuit technology as well as simulation of simple electrical circuits using established simulation tools;
- Hands-on knowledge in electrical measurement as well as measurement data acquisition and data analysis;
- Ability to handle MS-Windows and Linux operating systems as well as MS-Office applications;
- Fluent in written and spoken English, ideally good knowledge of German;
- Independent, structured way of working with a high level of proactivity and responsibility as well as good team skills and ability to work under pressure.
You may expect a multifaceted and interesting position within an internationally well-accepted research institution.
The position is limited until 31.12.2028. Salary is as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund), effective at GSI.
