Job Description

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in cloud microphysics modeling and aerosol-cloud interactions in atmospheric simulations at large-eddy simulation scales. Research will entail model development in a new exascale atmospheric code to represent cloud microphysics in a Lagrangian framework and interactions between aerosol particles and clouds. Simulation results will be compared to observations and experimental data. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, programmers, and project managers to develop, implement, and apply these modeling capabilities in a state-of-the art atmospheric model with GPU parallelization, which will then be used to explore aerosol-cloud interactions in simulations of transport and dispersion and also cloud processes for climate science applications. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division, Atmospheric Science Research and Applications Group.

You Will

  • Develop numerical methods and physics parameterizations appropriate for modeling the microphysical processes of clouds in the atmosphere and cloud interactions with aerosols.
  • Implement modules into a state-of-the-art C++ based multiscale environmental solver with adaptive mesh refinement.
  • Conduct research in the physics of aerosol-cloud interactions and cloud processes.
  • Conduct research in multiscale atmospheric simulation and the transport of hazardous materials.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of code physics development and scientific inquiry.
  • Work with other experts in a large team to facilitate synergistic model development and high-impact science.
  • Organize, analyze, and present data from research in journal publications and at professional conferences.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests of your choosing.
  • Interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology, engineering, nuclear science, or similar field.
  • Experience with one or more of the following areas: numerical simulation methods for atmospheric modeling, cloud or aerosol microphysics, atmospheric transport and dispersion, or advanced scientific programming in C++
  • Demonstrated ability to develop independent research pathways as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with developing cloud or aerosol microphysics models.
  • Experience with Lagrangian models for cloud or aerosol microphysics or transport and dispersion.
  • Experience with multiscale, urban, or large-eddy simulation scale atmospheric modeling.
  • Experience with adaptive mesh refinement.
  • Experience with GPU programming.
