Key Responsibilities
- Provide scientific expertise and leadership as part of a small computational and data analysis team supporting the NNSS Stockpile Stewardship Program.
- Provide support for several projects that are involved in collecting and analyzing data from a variety of optical signal measurement and visible imaging diagnostics, as well as historic underground testing data.
- Work assignments may include new capabilities for image and signal processing, machine learning, and deep learning development, data fusion, Bayesian reconstruction techniques, data processing and fielding of diagnostic systems.
- Active participation in the field with NNSS scientific, technical, and engineering teams.
- Work will require the development of independently driven model and algorithm development.
- Develop and build direct relationships with NWL partners and provide scientific guidance to focused and integrated experiments.
- Report on accomplishments to internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong time-management skills, be well organized, maintain safe work habits, and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
- Provide field support as needed for LLNL Great Basin local experiments at the LLNL Site 300 Contained Firing Facility, LLNL subcritical experiments fielded in the U1a Facility in Nevada, experiments fielded at JASPER the Joint actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research two-stage gas gun used to study actinide and non-actinide material under high pressures, temperatures, and strain rates, also located in Nevada.
- Provide analyst support for image and signal analysis efforts, to include activities such as spot size characterization, generating transfer curves, providing material density calculations, timing analysis, and photonic doppler velocimetry analysis.
- On-site in-situ analysis, as well as post-shot analysis is expected of the selected candidate.
- Perform other duties assigned by Management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in calculus-based technical (STEM) field plus at least 5 years relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
- Master’s degree preferred, or 9 years’ relevant experience; or a Ph.D. preferred or 14 years relevant experience.
- Ability to build teaming relationships with technical and other company organizations.
- Executes work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
- Self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
- Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Must have strong computational and analytical skills including practical experience analyzing data and developing data analysis algorithms,
- Demonstrated critical thinking, good judgement, clear sense of purpose, attention to detail, accountability for deliverables, and demonstrated project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated skill to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations, and to anticipate change and adjust promptly and effectively.
- Must possess the skills to promote an open and informal communications environment and develop mutual trust and teamwork.
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
